And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was. [Mark 1:34]
Demons are real. Jesus spoke to them and cast them out. There are many verses that affirm the reality of demons and their evil work among us. Demons can possess an unbeliever, and demons can harass and attempt to influence believers. It has been said of believers that Satan may have lost us for eternity, but not for time. He and his demons will do everything in their power to fight against the one they hate—God. Since you and I represent God, demons will seek to hurt us.
Demons will drag you into sin if you let them. Demons will bring temptation into your life with the hope that you will fall to sin, and they do this to disgrace God through you, if you let them.
Do not be naive about the power of these ancient wicked beings. They have been doing this for thousands of years, and you are how old? The Bible tells us that Satan is the God of this world, and that “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” [1 Peter 5:8]
In 1529 Martin Luther wrote a phenomenal song, A Mighty Fortress is Our God, that emphasizes the devil’s wickedness and power:
A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.
So what is your defense for this evil one who seeks to devour you, and who sends legions of demons out to humiliate and disgrace Christians like you and me? They are at work 24/7, and their evil work never ends.
Our defense is to put on the full armor of God to stand firm against evil, and “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.“ [James 4:7]
This is an effective defense, to resist the devil, and the full armor of God includes both defensive and offensive weapons. God has not sent you and me into the battlefield unarmed. We are fully armed, provided we appropriate these weapons.
Will you appropriate the full armor of God and resist the devil today?
I recommend an amazing rendition of A Mighty Fortress is Our God by Steve Green.
